Apostille vs Legalisation: What’s the Difference?

Apostille is a simplified form of document authentication used between countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention (1961). Countries with apostille include USA, UK, India, Canada (2024), Philippines, Bangladesh (2025), and 100+ others.

Legalisation / Attestation is the traditional chain of authentication required when the destination country is NOT a Hague member. Involves multiple steps: notary, government ministry, embassy of the destination country. Required for documents going to non-Hague countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, China.

The UAE has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. This means documents from Hague countries (USA, UK, India, etc.) still need UAE Embassy + MOFA attestation. The apostille simplifies your home country step, but does not eliminate UAE requirements. You cannot skip UAE Embassy attestation just because you have an apostille.
