Indian Experience Certificate: MOHRE Attestation Steps

Indian professionals need MEA apostille + MOJ-certified translation for MOHRE experience certificates. Step-by-step attestation chain from India to UAE.

You worked in India for five years. Your employer gave you an experience certificate on company letterhead. You brought it to Dubai thinking it would be enough. Then MOHRE asked for it “attested and translated.” You expected one step. You got four.

Indian professionals hit this wall regularly. The experience certificate is already in English. It has the company stamp and signature. It seems perfectly valid. But MOHRE needs it processed through a specific chain before they’ll accept it.

What MOHRE actually wants

For work permit applications that require proof of experience, MOHRE needs two things from your experience certificate:

  • Apostille (attestation). Proof that the document is genuine and issued by a real company. Since India is a Hague Convention member, you need an MEA apostille, not the old embassy attestation chain.
  • MOJ translation. An Arabic translation done by an MOJ-licensed translator in the UAE. The translation includes the apostille details.

The order matters. Attestation comes first, then translation. If you translate first, the translation won’t include the apostille stamps, and you’ll need to translate again.

The apostille process for Indian documents

India joined the Hague Convention in July 2005. Indian documents are apostilled through the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) or authorized agencies in India. The process is:

  • Step 1: Get the experience certificate notarized. An Indian notary public verifies the document.
  • Step 2: State-level authentication. The state government’s Home Department or General Administration Department authenticates the notarization. This step varies by state.
  • Step 3: MEA apostille. The Ministry of External Affairs issues the apostille sticker or stamp. This is the final step that makes the document internationally recognized.

If you’re already in the UAE, you’ll need someone in India to handle these steps. Some companies offer remote apostille services. You courier the document to India, they process it through the chain, and courier it back.

Then the translation

Once the apostilled experience certificate arrives in the UAE, it needs MOJ-certified translation into Arabic. The translator produces an Arabic version that includes the company details, your role, dates of employment, and the apostille reference.

Standard experience certificates are translated within one business day. If the certificate has unusual formatting, multiple pages, attachments, or additional endorsements. It may take an extra day.

What if your employer is gone?

Indian companies close, merge, or become unreachable. If your previous employer can’t issue a new experience certificate, MOHRE may accept alternatives:

  • Salary slips on company letterhead (multiple months)
  • Appointment letter showing your start date and role
  • PF (Provident Fund) statements showing the employer’s contribution period
  • Form 16 (tax deduction certificates) from the employer

Each alternative document needs the same apostille and MOJ translation chain. Check with MOHRE or your employer’s PRO about which alternatives they’ll accept for your specific visa category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our translation services.

Does an Indian experience certificate need apostille for UAE?

India is a Hague Convention member since July 2005. Indian documents can be apostilled through the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) or authorized agencies. An MEA apostille is accepted by UAE authorities as proof of document authenticity, replacing the older embassy attestation chain.

Does MOHRE require MOJ translation for experience certificates?

Yes. When MOHRE requests an experience certificate as part of a work permit application, it must be translated by an MOJ-licensed translator in the UAE. The attestation (apostille) must be completed before translation. The translator includes the apostille details in the Arabic translation.

What if my Indian employer won't issue a new experience certificate?

If your previous Indian employer is unresponsive or closed, you may be able to use alternative documents: payslips with company letterhead, appointment letters, or salary certificates. Check with MOHRE whether they accept alternatives. Each document used as a substitute will also need apostille and MOJ translation.
