A Name Was Misspelled on a Contract. The Deal Fell Through.
Real examples of how translation errors cost businesses in the UAE. Misspelled names, wrong amounts, and mistranslated clauses with real consequences.
The investor pulled out. Not because of the valuation. Not because of the market. Because the company name was transliterated differently in the Arabic MoA than in the English shareholder agreement. The due diligence team flagged an entity mismatch. The deal collapsed while lawyers argued about whether it was the same company.
Errors that cost money
Translation mistakes sound minor until they’re not. Here are patterns we see:
- Name transliteration mismatch. “Mohammed” vs “Muhammad” vs “Mohamed” across documents creates verification failures at banks, GDRFA, and corporate registries. One inconsistency cascades through every linked document.
- Amount discrepancies. Arabic numerals read right-to-left in text context. A translated invoice showing “150,000” where the original says “105,000” changes the entire financial obligation. Comma and decimal conventions differ between Arabic and English contexts.
- Clause mistranslation. “الطرف الأول يتعهد” (the first party commits) vs “الطرف الأول قد يتعهد” (the first party may commit): one word changes an obligation into a suggestion.
- Date format errors. Hijri dates mistranslated to Gregorian dates can shift contract timelines by days or weeks.
Why accountability matters
When an MOJ-certified translator makes an error, there’s a system for correction. Their license number is on the document. They have professional accountability. They correct the error and reissue at their cost.
When a random WhatsApp contact makes an error, you discover it at the counter. The translator is unreachable. You start over with someone else. The delay costs you whatever deadline you were facing.
Prevention is cheaper than correction
For high-value documents: commercial contracts, corporate formations, property transactions. The translation cost is negligible compared to the deal value. Spending a small amount on a verification review (where a second translator checks the first) can prevent a problem worth thousands. WhatsApp us for a quote on verification reviews.
We use a double-check system. If an error slips through, we correct it and redeliver at our cost. Send your business documents on WhatsApp: +971 50 862 0217.
