Typing Centre Overcharged for Translation: Why It Happens

You just arrived in Dubai. You need your birth certificate translated for a visa application. You walk into the typing center near the GDRFA office. The person behind the counter takes your document, quotes you a price that feels high, and you pay because you have no reference point. You find out later that a direct translation service charges significantly less for the same work.

This happens constantly. Not because all typing centers are dishonest — most are legitimate businesses. The problem is nobody tells newcomers what things should cost or how the system works.

What typing centers are and what they actually do

Typing centers are walk-in shops clustered near government offices: GDRFA, MOHRE, ICA service centres, courts, municipality offices. They help with:

• Government form filling (visa applications, trade licence renewals, Ejari applications)
• Document scanning and photocopying
• Submission logistics to government counters
• Translation services (outsourced)

Translation is not their core service. Most typing centers don’t have an MOJ-licensed translator on staff. When you bring them a document to translate, they:

1. Take your document
2. Send it (photo or original) to an external MOJ-licensed translator
3. Collect the translation when it’s done
4. Add their handling fee on top of the translator’s rate
5. Hand you the final document

You’re paying for the convenience layer. That’s not inherently wrong — convenience has value. The problem is when the markup is 100-200% above the direct rate and you don’t know that.

Why the pricing varies so much

Location rent: Typing centers near Amer service centres, GDRFA offices, or Dubai Courts pay high rents for that foot traffic. Those costs get passed on.

Walk-in premium: When someone walks in urgently needing a translation done now, they’ll pay more. You’re paying for the convenience of not having to search for a translator while standing at a government counter.

Lack of price transparency: Typing centers rarely display a rate card. They quote based on what they think the customer will accept. If you look like a newcomer with an urgent deadline, the price adjusts.

Low competition awareness: If you’ve never needed a translation in Dubai before, you have no reference point. You don’t know whether AED 150 or AED 450 for a birth certificate translation is reasonable.

How to verify MOJ certification

The critical question when getting any translation in Dubai: is this actually MOJ-certified?

MOJ-certified means the translator is licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice. Their licence number appears on the translation document, alongside their official stamp and signature.

Before paying for a translation at any typing center, ask: “What is the translator’s MOJ licence number?”

A legitimate MOJ-licensed translator knows their number. If the typing center can’t answer, or gives you a vague response, the translation may not be MOJ-certified. This means it may be rejected by courts, GDRFA, or other government authorities even if the content is accurate.

What happens when a typing center translation is rejected

Rejection is the worst-case outcome of an unchecked typing center translation:

• You paid the elevated typing center price
• The translation gets rejected at GDRFA or another authority
• You go back to the typing center
• They may or may not redo it for free (many charge again)
• You’ve now lost time and paid twice

A direct MOJ-licensed translation service has accountability: if their certified translation is rejected for a translation error (not a document problem), they will correct it. That’s a reasonable standard to hold them to — and it’s a standard you can’t always enforce at a typing center.

When typing centers are the right choice

This isn’t an argument that typing centers are always wrong. They’re genuinely useful in specific situations:

You’re physically at a government counter right now. If you’re standing at GDRFA and just discovered your document needs translation, a nearby typing center is the fastest solution. Pay the premium for the immediate service.

You need multiple services handled together. If you need form filling + translation + submission handled by one office while you wait, a typing center is a reasonable one-stop shop. You’re paying for coordination, not just translation.

The documents are complex. Some typing centers have built relationships with translators who specialise in specific document types (tenancy disputes, police reports, court documents). If the typing center has that specialisation and can guarantee fast, accurate MOJ translation, the premium may be justified.

You don’t have a phone or access to WhatsApp. Direct translation services typically work via WhatsApp or email. If you don’t have easy access, the walk-in format is practical.
