Driving License Translation for Abu Dhabi DOT
MOJ Certified for Department of Transport Conversion
Abu Dhabi license conversion runs through the Department of Transport (DOT), not RTA. The approved country list is the same across the UAE. However, the Abu Dhabi process has distinct requirements that catch many applicants off guard. A video eye test, a video of your license, and gear type selection are all mandatory here.
| Abu Dhabi DOT Requirement | Dubai RTA Equivalent | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Video eye test | Standard paper eye test | Must use Al Jabeer or Yateem |
| License video submission | Not required | Video showing both sides |
| Gear type selection | Selected later | Manual or automatic at application |
| 3-5 day processing | 1-2 day processing | Longer timeline overall |
Why Abu Dhabi Is Different from Dubai
The DOT operates independently from Dubai’s RTA. Both authorities accept MOJ-certified translations. Both follow the same approved country list. But Abu Dhabi adds extra verification steps. The video eye test replaced paper certificates several years ago. The license video requirement helps DOT staff verify documents remotely. These steps add time but reduce rejection rates.
Complete These Requirements Before Contacting Us
Abu Dhabi DOT requires nine items for license conversion. Unlike Dubai, you must gather all documents before requesting the translation. The translation is the final piece of your application.
What You Need Ready First (Items 1-8)
- Emirates ID — both sides (must show Abu Dhabi residency)
- Foreign driving license — both sides
- Video showing both sides of the license (Abu Dhabi-specific)
- Eye test receipt from Al Jabeer or Yateem optician
- Passport copy (with valid Abu Dhabi residence visa)
- Personal photo (recent, passport-sized)
- Valid mobile number (for SMS notifications from DOT)
- Gear type selection — manual or automatic transmission
Item 9 — What we provide: MOJ-certified Arabic translation of your driving license. Send us your license photos once items 1-8 are ready.
Who Needs This Service
Expats arriving in Abu Dhabi for work in ADGM financial district, government roles, or oil and gas positions often need license conversion within their first weeks. Al Ain residents follow the same requirements but use a separate traffic department. Complete all DOT requirements first, then contact us for the translation to finalize your application.
Abu Dhabi DOT License Conversion: The Complete Guide
How Abu Dhabi Differs from Dubai
Dubai and Abu Dhabi share the same approved country list for license conversion. The translation requirements are identical. But the process you follow and the documents you submit are different in several important ways.
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport (DOT) manages all license services in the emirate. This includes Abu Dhabi city, Mussafah, and Al Ain. If your Emirates ID shows Abu Dhabi residency, DOT is your only option. You cannot convert through Dubai RTA for convenience.
The three main differences are the video eye test, the license video requirement, and the gear type declaration. Dubai requires none of these at the initial application stage. In Abu Dhabi, you must complete all these steps before requesting the translation from us.
The Video Eye Test Explained
Abu Dhabi replaced traditional paper eye certificates with a video-recorded examination. The optician tests your vision while a camera records the entire process. Results upload directly to the DOT system electronically.
Only two optician chains are approved:
- Al Jabeer Optical — Branches across Abu Dhabi city and Al Ain
- Yateem Optician — Locations throughout Abu Dhabi emirate
The test takes approximately 20 minutes and costs AED 150-250. No referral or appointment is strictly required. However, calling ahead confirms the branch has video equipment available that day. Not every location has equipment running at all times.
What Happens During the Test
The optician tests each eye individually, then both together. You read letters on a screen at varying distances. The camera records your responses and the optician’s findings. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them. The test notes whether corrective lenses are required for driving.
After the test, the optician uploads results to the DOT database. You receive a receipt showing completion. Keep this receipt. You will need it when submitting your application at DOT. Results stay in the system, so DOT can verify them electronically.
Paper Tests Are Not Accepted
Even if you completed an eye test at a Dubai optician last week, Abu Dhabi DOT will not accept it. Paper certificates from any emirate are invalid for Abu Dhabi applications. You must complete the video version at an approved Abu Dhabi optician. This is a firm requirement with no exceptions.
The License Video Requirement
Abu Dhabi DOT requires a short video showing both sides of your foreign driving license. This is separate from the photos you provide. The video allows DOT staff to verify security features, holograms, and other anti-fraud elements on your license.
How to Record an Acceptable Video
Place your license on a flat, well-lit surface. Use your smartphone camera. Record the front side for 5-10 seconds, showing all text clearly. Flip the license and record the back for another 5-10 seconds. Tilt the license slightly so any holographic elements catch the light.
Avoid shadows, reflections, and shaky footage. The video does not need editing or special formatting. A simple, steady recording is sufficient. Send the video to us via WhatsApp and we confirm quality before you submit.
Gear Type Selection
At the time of DOT application, you must declare whether you want a manual or automatic license. This is not a trivial choice. It appears as a permanent restriction on your UAE license.
If your foreign license covers manual transmission:
- Select manual — Drive both manual and automatic vehicles
- Select automatic — Restricted to automatic vehicles only
If your foreign license is automatic-only, you can only select automatic. DOT cross-references this against your original license and translation. Our translation clearly indicates any automatic restrictions so you know your options before applying.
Changing from automatic to manual later requires a driving test. Most applicants with manual-capable licenses choose manual to maintain flexibility.
Approved Countries for Direct Conversion
The approved country list is UAE-wide. Abu Dhabi uses the same list as Dubai and all other emirates. Holders of licenses from these countries can convert without a driving test:
GCC Countries: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar
Europe: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Turkey
Americas: United States, Canada
Asia Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand
Other: South Africa
If your country is not on this list, you still need the MOJ translation. DOT requires it to open your file and establish your driving history before directing you to a driving school.
Countries Requiring the DOT Driving Test
If your country is not on the approved list, you must complete driving lessons and pass the DOT test. Common nationalities requiring testing include:
- India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka
- Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam
- Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria
- Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia
- China (Mainland)
The translated license is still required for your file opening with DOT. It helps establish your driving experience and may reduce the number of mandatory lessons at some driving schools.
Abu Dhabi Timeline: What to Expect
For approved-country license holders, the Abu Dhabi process takes 3-5 days total. Here is the typical breakdown:
Day 1-2: Video Eye Test (Your Step) — Visit Al Jabeer or Yateem for the video eye test. Walk-ins are accepted at most branches. The test takes 20 minutes. Results upload to DOT immediately. Pick up your receipt. Also record your license video and gather all other documents.
Day 2-3: Translation (Our Step) — Once your documents are ready, send us your license photos via WhatsApp. Standard service delivers within 24 hours. Express service completes in 2-4 hours. This is the only step that involves us.
Day 3-4: DOT Submission (Your Step) — Visit a typing center near your chosen DOT center. They enter your details into the system. Submit your complete nine-item checklist at DOT. Staff verify your documents and video eye test results.
Day 4-5: License Issuance — DOT processes your application within 1-2 business days. You receive an SMS notification when your license is ready for collection. Return to DOT to pick up your UAE license.
Compare this to Dubai, where approved-country holders often complete everything in 1-2 days. The extra time in Abu Dhabi comes from the video eye test booking and the separate processing step after submission.
ADGM and Financial District Professionals
Many expats relocating to Abu Dhabi for positions in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) need license conversion within their first weeks. The financial district attracts professionals from approved countries who qualify for direct conversion. Our express service ensures the translation does not become a bottleneck in your settling-in process.
ADGM employees typically also need bank statement translations and degree certificate translations for their employment files. We handle all three document types with the same MOJ certification.
Common Abu Dhabi Rejection Reasons
- Wrong eye test type: Paper eye tests from Dubai or other emirates are not accepted. Must be video format from approved optician.
- Missing license video: Photos alone are not sufficient. DOT requires the video showing both sides of your foreign license.
- Emirates ID not Abu Dhabi: Your ID must show Abu Dhabi emirate residency. Dubai or Sharjah ID holders cannot convert through DOT.
- No gear type selected: You must declare manual or automatic at application. The form cannot proceed without this selection.
- Expired foreign license: Licenses expired more than two years are typically not accepted without additional documentation from your home country.
- Name mismatch: Your license name must match your passport spelling. Our translation preserves the exact name from your original document.
Al Ain: Separate Processing
Al Ain residents follow the same requirements as Abu Dhabi city but use the Al Ain Traffic Department. This is a separate office within the DOT system. You cannot use Abu Dhabi city centers if your Emirates ID shows Al Ain residency.
Al Ain has its own queue and processing timeline. During busy periods, processing may take a day or two longer than Abu Dhabi city. Al Jabeer Optical operates branches in Al Ain where you can complete the video eye test locally.
The document checklist is identical. The translation requirement is the same. The only difference is the physical location where you submit your application.
MOJ Translation: The Final Piece of Your Application
The MOJ-certified Arabic translation completes your nine-item checklist. Once you have gathered items 1-8, send us your license and we prepare the translation. Without it, DOT cannot process your file. The translation includes all license categories, validity dates, restrictions, and endorsements.
Our translations are formatted specifically for UAE traffic authority requirements. The MOJ stamp, QR verification code, and translator license number (#701) allow DOT staff to validate the document instantly. After Your License Conversion
Once you receive your UAE license, keep your translated document. Some car rental companies and insurance providers ask to see the original translation during the first year of your UAE driving history. The translation also serves as proof of your driving background if you ever need to reference it for employment or insurance purposes.
New arrivals often need several translations during their first months. Police clearance certificates, bank statements, and visa-related documents are all common alongside license translation.
License Translation Across Abu Dhabi
Residents across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and surrounding areas use our driving license translation for DOT conversion. New arrivals in the ADGM financial district often need license translation alongside visa documentation and police clearance certificates.
For a broader view of license translation across the UAE, see our driving license translation hub. Dubai residents should visit our Dubai RTA guide instead. We also translate degree certificates and bank statements for complete immigration packages.
