Japan’s e-visa system has made applications more convenient, but convenience hasn’t eliminated the document requirements that trip up applicants every day. Here’s exactly what you need so your application sails through on the first attempt.

Who Can Apply for Japan e-Visa from the UAE?

You CAN Apply If You:

  • Hold a valid UAE residence visa (not a visit visa)
  • Are a citizen of eligible countries including India, Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam
  • Have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
  • Have a UAE residence visa valid for more than 6 months at application time
  • Are traveling for tourism purposes only

You CANNOT Apply If You:

  • Hold only a tourist or visit visa in the UAE
  • Are traveling for business, work, or study purposes
  • Have any previous immigration issues with Japan

UAE Passport Holders: As of July 2025, UAE nationals can visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. If you hold a UAE passport, you don’t need to apply for anything, just book your flight and go.

Nationality-Specific Requirements from the UAE

Japan’s e-visa eligibility and document expectations vary by passport. These differences trip up applicants who follow generic advice.

Nationalitye-Visa EligibleExtra Documents NeededTranslation Notes
IndianYesPassport must show UAE residence page. If degree/employment letter is in Hindi, certified English translation required.Bank statements from Indian accounts (if submitted) need English translation. See our Indian documents guide.
FilipinoYesOFW applicants: provide OWWA membership or latest OEC. Dependent visa holders need sponsor NOC.Documents in Tagalog require certified English translation.
PakistaniYesAdditional financial scrutiny. Submit 6-month bank statements (not 3-month). Employment letter must detail salary breakdown.Urdu documents (nikah nama, employment letters) need certified translation.
BangladeshiYesMust provide both UAE and Bangladesh bank statements if employed less than 1 year in UAE.Bengali documents require certified English translation.
Sri LankanYesStandard document set. Sinhala documents need certified translation.Relatively straightforward if UAE residence is valid.
IndonesianYesStandard document set. Indonesian (Bahasa) documents need certified English translation for consulate submission.Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and employment letters in Bahasa Indonesia require certified translation. Family register (Kartu Keluarga) may be requested.
VietnameseYesStandard document set. Vietnamese-language documents need certified translation.Employment letters from Vietnamese companies in UAE need English translation.

Why this matters: The Japanese consulate reviews applications in context of the applicant’s nationality and travel history. Indian and Pakistani passport holders face the most document scrutiny from UAE. This is not discrimination — it reflects historical overstay statistics that Japan tracks per-country.

Required Documents

1. Passport Copy

  • Valid for at least 6 months from your intended arrival date in Japan
  • Clear, high-resolution, color scan
  • Free from shadows, glare, or obscured text
  • Showing all four edges of the passport page

Common Mistake: Submitting a scan with even slight cropping of passport edges. The Japanese consulate will reject it if they can’t verify the full document.

If your UAE residence visa is stamped in an old passport, you must submit copies of both passports.

2. UAE Residence Visa Copy

  • Valid for more than 6 months at the time of application
  • Clearly legible in the scan
  • Matched with a copy of your Emirates ID

The Validity Trap: The 6-month validity requirement is counted from your application date, not your travel date. If your visa expires in 5 months and you’re applying for a trip in 2 months, you’re ineligible.

3. Proof of Employment

If Employed:

  • Certificate of Employment or Salary Certificate
  • Must include position, monthly/annual income, and company contact details
  • Must be addressed to “The Consul-General of Japan in Dubai”
  • Company seal and signature required (including signatory’s name and position)

If on Dependent Visa and Working:

  • NOC from your UAE visa sponsor
  • Passport copy and residence visa copy of your sponsor
  • Your employer’s Certificate of Employment

If Self-Employed or Golden Visa Holder:

  • Trade license copy
  • Letter from your Free Zone authority (if applicable)
  • Bank statements showing business activity

Common Mistake: Submitting a generic employment letter not addressed to the Japanese Consulate. Applications have been delayed over this.

4. Bank Certificate and Bank Statements

A bank certificate (also called a bank balance certificate or bank letter) confirms your account status and balance. Some applicants submit a bank certificate for Japan visa applications alongside their bank statements. While VFS primarily requires bank statements, a bank certificate adds weight to your financial proof, especially for self-employed applicants.

Bank Statement Requirements:

  • Up-to-date 3-month UAE electronic bank statement
  • Your full name as account holder
  • Account number and transaction history
  • Sufficient balance to support your trip

What the Consulate Looks for on a Bank Certificate:

The Japanese consulate (and VFS) evaluates bank certificates differently than other embassies. Here is what they actually check:

ElementWhat They WantCommon Problem
Account holder nameMust match passport name exactlyShortened names or transliterated Arabic spellings cause mismatches
Account typeSavings or current (not fixed deposit alone)Fixed deposit certificates without liquid account statements get flagged
Balance dateWithin 1 week of application submissionBank certificates issued weeks earlier are considered stale
Bank letterheadOfficial letterhead with branch address and contactSome UAE banks issue certificates without branch details
LanguageEnglish or JapaneseArabic-only certificates from local banks need certified translation
Authorized signatureBank officer name, designation, and signatureRubber-stamp-only certificates without officer details may be questioned

The “Electronic” Requirement: Hand-written or printed statements from a bank branch may not be accepted. The consulate prefers electronic PDF statements downloaded from your online banking. Note: if your bank statement has Arabic stamps or headers, VFS may reject it. This is a common issue with Schengen visa applications from Dubai and applies to Japan visa submissions through VFS as well.

Bank Certificate vs Bank Statement — Which to Submit:

Submit both if possible. The bank statement shows transaction patterns (consistent salary credits, no suspicious large deposits). The bank certificate confirms the current balance on official letterhead. Self-employed applicants and Golden Visa holders benefit most from submitting a bank certificate alongside statements.

5. Travel Itinerary and Bookings

  • Confirmed flight tickets (E-ticket, flight information slip, or travel agency voucher)
  • Hotel booking confirmation with hotel name, address, contact info, dates, and your name
  • Detailed daily itinerary showing where you’ll be each day, including accommodation and contact information

Japan verifies that your stated purpose (tourism) matches your movements. A business meeting in your “tourism” itinerary would be grounds for rejection.

6. Passport Photo

  • Recent photo (not older than 6 months)
  • White background, clear and high resolution
  • Photo must be glued, not stapled, to your application form

The Translation Requirement

This is where many UAE residents encounter unexpected delays. If any supporting documents are in a language other than English or Japanese, you’ll need certified translation.

Documents Commonly Requiring Translation:

  • Employment letters from companies using Arabic as their official language
  • Bank statements from local UAE banks issued in Arabic
  • Sponsor documents for dependent visa holders
  • Trade licenses issued by Arabic-speaking authorities

Translation Requirements for VFS Submission:

  • Accurate to the original document
  • Signed and stamped by a qualified translator
  • Presented alongside the original documents

This isn’t the same as MOJ legal translation required for UAE government submissions, but it needs to be professional, certified translation that can withstand scrutiny. For other immigration document translation needs, see our full immigration services page.

Do I need to translate my documents for a Japan visa application?

If any supporting documents are in a language other than English or Japanese, you'll need certified translation. This commonly affects employment letters, bank statements, and trade licenses issued in Arabic.

What is the minimum residence visa validity required?

Your UAE residence visa must be valid for more than 6 months at the time of application, not your travel date. If your visa expires in 5 months and you're applying for a trip in 2 months, you're ineligible.

Where do I apply for a Japan visa in Dubai?

Since August 2024, applications are submitted through VFS Global at WAFI Mall, Level 2, Falcon Phase 2, Dubai. The Japanese Consulate no longer accepts direct applications.

Do I need a bank certificate for Japan visa?

VFS primarily requires 3-month electronic bank statements. If your bank statement is in Arabic, you will need certified English translation.

How far in advance should I apply?

Submit your application 4-6 weeks before your intended travel date. VFS cannot accept applications if your flight is within 2 weeks, and processing takes at least 1 week (longer during peak seasons).

Do I apply at the Japan Embassy in Abu Dhabi or VFS Dubai?

It depends on your emirate of residence. Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Western Region residents apply at the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi. Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, UAQ, Fujairah, and RAK residents apply through VFS Global in Dubai. Applying at the wrong location will result in your application being turned away.

What should a bank certificate include for a Japan visa?

A bank certificate for Japan visa should include your full name matching your passport, account type (savings or current), current balance dated within one week of application, bank letterhead with branch address, and an authorized officer signature with name and designation. Arabic-only certificates need certified English translation.

Are Japan visa requirements different for Indian passport holders in UAE?

Indian passport holders in the UAE are eligible for Japan e-visa but face additional scrutiny. Submit 3-month bank statements showing consistent salary credits, an employment letter addressed to the Japanese consulate, and certified English translation of any Hindi or regional language documents.
