# Moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Your Documents Don't Automatically Transfer.

5 min read

You got a job offer in Abu Dhabi. Or you found a cheaper apartment there. Or your company relocated its office. Either way, you're moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. You packed your things, cancelled your Ejari, and headed down the E11. Then you discovered your Dubai paperwork doesn't work in Abu Dhabi.

People assume the UAE is one system. It's not. Each emirate has its own courts, its own tenancy registration, and its own procedures. Moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is more like moving between two states than two neighborhoods.

## What changes when you cross the border

Tenancy registration. Dubai uses Ejari. Abu Dhabi uses Tawtheeq. They're completely separate systems run by different authorities. Your Dubai Ejari means nothing in Abu Dhabi. You'll need to register your new tenancy through Tawtheeq — Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport runs it through the TAMM platform.

Court system. Dubai has Dubai Courts. Abu Dhabi has ADJD (Abu Dhabi Judicial Department). If you have an ongoing legal matter — a rental dispute, a [](/blog/rera-dispute-arabic-english-difference)tenancy issue, a civil case — it stays with the court where it was filed. But any new legal matters in Abu Dhabi go through ADJD, which has its own procedures and documentation requirements.

Free zones. Dubai has DIFC with its English-language courts. Abu Dhabi has ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market) with its own English-language [](/blog/difc-vs-dubai-courts-translation)common law court system. If your work involves either free zone, the rules are different despite both being English-language jurisdictions.

## Documents you'll need to sort out

The good news: most of your existing translated documents remain valid. MOJ certification is a federal stamp — it works across all seven emirates. You don't need to re-translate your degree, marriage certificate, or other personal documents.

The documents that change are location-specific ones:

- New tenancy contract. Your Abu Dhabi [](/legal/contracts/lease)lease agreement will be registered through Tawtheeq. The contract format differs slightly from Dubai's standard Ejari contracts.
- Utility setup. Abu Dhabi uses ADDC (Abu Dhabi Distribution Company) instead of DEWA. New registration, new account. Same [](/blog/dewa-ejari-name-mismatch-passport)name-matching issues can surface.
- Vehicle registration. If your car is registered in Dubai, you'll need to transfer the registration to Abu Dhabi through the Abu Dhabi police. License and registration documents may need updating.
- Children's school records. If your children are changing schools across emirates, transcripts and [](/personal/academic)academic documents may need certified translations for the new school's admission process.

## The Abu Dhabi advantage

Some things are actually easier in Abu Dhabi. The TAMM platform consolidates many government services into one system. [](/blog/abu-dhabi-vs-dubai-translation-requirements)Abu Dhabi's government entities have invested heavily in digital processing. And for certain filings, Abu Dhabi's processing times can be faster than Dubai's.

But the document requirements are just as strict. Every filing through ADJD, TAMM, or Tawtheeq that involves a non-Arabic document still requires an Arabic translation. The MOJ stamp you got for your Dubai filings works here too — you just might need translations of additional documents that Abu Dhabi requires but Dubai didn't.

## Plan your document checklist before you move

Before you relocate, make a list of every government interaction you'll need in Abu Dhabi: tenancy registration, utility setup, school enrollment, vehicle transfer, visa update. Then check which documents each process requires. Having translations ready before you arrive saves the scramble of discovering requirements one appointment at a time.

If you're moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and need to sort out which documents need translation for Abu Dhabi processes, send them on WhatsApp — [+971 50 862 0217](https://wa.me/971508620217). We'll tell you what Abu Dhabi requires and what you already have covered.

## Common questions

### Do I need new translations when moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

Your existing MOJ-certified translations remain valid across all emirates. However, Abu Dhabi-specific processes may require additional documents that weren't needed in Dubai. Check each process's requirements before your first appointment.

### What is the difference between Ejari and Tawtheeq?

Ejari is Dubai's tenancy registration (managed by RERA). Tawtheeq is Abu Dhabi's equivalent (managed by the Department of Municipalities and Transport via TAMM). They're completely separate systems. You cannot use Dubai Ejari in Abu Dhabi.

### Are Abu Dhabi court requirements different from Dubai Courts?

Yes. Abu Dhabi uses ADJD while Dubai has Dubai Courts. Both require Arabic translations, but procedures and documentation differ. Abu Dhabi also has ADGM with English-language courts, similar to Dubai's DIFC.
