DED (Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development) — Arabic-Only Requirement

ADDED (often referred to as DED Abu Dhabi) requires all submitted documents to be in Arabic only. Unlike ADGM, which accepts English, or Dubai DED, which sometimes accepts bilingual formats, Abu Dhabi DED does not accept English-language documents for trade license applications, commercial registrations, or business amendments.

Key points for ADDED submissions:

• Arabic-only format: Trade license applications, Memoranda of Association, board resolutions, and shareholder documents must be in Arabic. Bilingual documents are not accepted — even English/Arabic same-page formats will be rejected.
• No separate English copy: ADDED does not require or accept an English companion document. Submit only the MOJ-certified Arabic translation.
• Impact on free zone companies: Companies registered in ADGM or KEZAD that need a mainland trade license through ADDED must provide MOJ-certified Arabic translations of their incorporation documents. The original English documents from the free zone are not sufficient on their own.
• Translator stamp visibility: ADDED reviewers check for the MOJ license number on the translator stamp. Translations without a visible license number are returned without processing.

This differs from Dubai DED, which in some cases accepts bilingual filings for certain free zone crossover documents. For Abu Dhabi, the rule is consistent: Arabic only.

Abu Dhabi Notary vs Dubai Notary — Translation Differences

Abu Dhabi notary offices (operating under ADJD) and Dubai notary offices (operating under Dubai Courts) follow the same federal MOJ framework but differ in practice.

Document signing before notary:

• Abu Dhabi notary: Requires the Arabic translation to be attached to the original before the notary appointment. • Dubai notary: Accepts the original document for notarisation first, with the Arabic translation submitted separately afterward. The translation can be completed after the notary appointment in some case types.

Power of Attorney (POA) formatting:

• Abu Dhabi: Powers of attorney presented to Abu Dhabi notaries must include the Arabic text on the same page as the English (bilingual same-page format) for bilingual POAs. Separate English and Arabic documents are not accepted for notarisation of bilingual POAs.
• Dubai: POAs can be prepared as separate English and Arabic documents. Dubai notary accepts both formats, though bilingual same-page is also accepted.

Witness statements and affidavits:

• Abu Dhabi: All witness statements and affidavits must be in Arabic before the notary session. No English-only affidavits are accepted.
• Dubai: English affidavits may be accepted with a notary stamp, followed by a separate Arabic translation for court filing.

Attestation chain differences: Abu Dhabi notarised documents that need to be used abroad follow a specific attestation chain: Notary → ADJD → MOFA. Dubai follows: Notary → Dubai Courts → MOFA.
