Latin Diploma Translation for MOHRE and UAE Visas

Your degree is in Latin and MOHRE needs it translated. How Latin-to-Arabic certified translation works for German, Polish, Hungarian, and Italian diplomas.

You land in Dubai with a German engineering degree. The diploma is a heavy parchment document with your name, the qualification, and the conferring date — all in Latin. The HR team needs it for your work permit. MOHRE needs it in Arabic. The typing centre down the street looks at it and says they do not handle Latin.

This is not an unusual situation. German, Polish, Hungarian, Austrian, Czech, and some Italian and Finnish universities still issue diplomas in Latin as a formal academic tradition. The qualification is real. The attestation chain is standard. The only complication is the language.

Why Some University Diplomas Are in Latin

Latin diplomas are a tradition in continental European higher education. The practice dates back centuries, when Latin was the language of scholarship. Many universities continue it today as a ceremonial formality.

The diploma — the formal certificate confirming your qualification — is in Latin. It states your name (often Latinised), the degree conferred, the faculty, the date, and the university seal. The transcripts, the diploma supplement, and the grade records are in the local language or English.

MOHRE does not accept Latin. The document must be translated into Arabic by an MOJ-licensed translator before it can be uploaded to the work permit system.

The confusion is understandable. The applicant assumes a European degree will be in English or the local language. The typing centre assumes the same. When the diploma arrives in Latin, nobody in the usual chain knows what to do with it.

The Translation Options

Direct Latin-to-Arabic Translation

If the MOJ-licensed translator reads Latin, the translation is done directly from Latin to Arabic. This is the fastest and cheapest option. The translator renders the Latin text into Arabic, stamps the translation with the MOJ seal and license number, and the document is ready for MOHRE submission.

Not every translator offers this language pair. Latin is a specialist requirement. When you contact a translation office, specify that the diploma is in Latin — sending a photo via WhatsApp before visiting saves both parties time.

Two-Step Translation

If the translator does not read Latin, the process takes two steps:

  1. A certified Latin-to-English (or Latin-to-German) translation by a sworn translator in the issuing country or a Latin specialist in the UAE
  2. An MOJ-certified translation from that language into Arabic

The two-step approach produces the same legally valid result. The MOJ-certified Arabic translation references the intermediate translation, and both documents are submitted together.

The extra step adds cost and one to two days of processing. For applicants on a deadline, this matters. If your work permit is time-sensitive, confirm the translator’s Latin capability before booking.

The Attestation Chain — Same as Any Foreign Degree

A Latin diploma follows the same attestation chain as any other foreign degree. The language does not change the process:

  1. Home-country education authority — the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) in Germany, the relevant ministry in Poland or Hungary
  2. Home MOFA — the foreign ministry of the issuing country
  3. UAE embassy in the home country — legalisation by the UAE diplomatic mission
  4. MOFA UAE after arrival — final attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The translation must happen after all attestation stamps are on the document. Translating the bare diploma before the embassy and MOFA stamps are applied means the translation does not reflect the final document. MOHRE and ICP for Golden Visa applications require the translation of the attested version.

For countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention — Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Finland all are — the apostille replaces the UAE embassy legalisation step. However, UAE is not a Hague member, so the embassy step is still required for UAE use regardless of whether the home country issues an apostille.

The Transcripts Are a Separate Document

The diploma confirms the qualification. The transcripts list the courses, grades, and credit hours. MOHRE and MOE equivalency applications typically require both.

The transcripts are almost never in Latin. They are in German (Zeugnis), Polish (Suplement do Dyplomu), Hungarian, or English. Each transcript needs its own MOJ-certified Arabic translation, separate from the diploma translation.

When preparing the full file for MOHRE or a Golden Visa application, the translation order is:

  • Diploma (Latin → Arabic)
  • Transcripts (German/Polish/English → Arabic)
  • Diploma supplement if issued (usually English → Arabic)

All three must reflect the attested versions. The translator who handles the Latin diploma may or may not handle the local-language transcripts — confirm before assuming.

MOE Equivalency for Latin Diplomas

If the degree is not from a university on the UAE-recognised top 100 list, the Ministry of Education requires an equivalency letter confirming that the foreign qualification matches a UAE degree level.

The MOE equivalency application requires:

  • The attested diploma with MOJ-certified Arabic translation
  • The attested transcripts with MOJ-certified Arabic translation
  • The diploma supplement (if available)
  • A completed application through the MOE portal

The fact that the diploma is in Latin does not affect the equivalency process. MOE evaluates the qualification based on the institution, the program, and the credit structure — not the language of the document.

Processing time for MOE equivalency is ten to fifteen working days. The Indian degree translation chain follows the same equivalency process, just with a different source language.

Common Mistakes with Latin Diplomas

Submitting Without Translation

The MOHRE portal does not reject Latin documents with a helpful error message. The upload may succeed, but the document review flags it as untranslated. The application stalls without a clear reason until the PRO investigates.

Using a University English Certificate Instead of the Diploma

Some applicants submit the English diploma supplement or a university-issued English certificate instead of the Latin diploma. MOHRE may accept this if the English version is an official university document with the registrar’s seal. However, if the official diploma is the Latin one, MOHRE may request it specifically — particularly for occupational classification reviews.

Translating Before Attestation

The translation must reflect the attested document — with the embassy stamps, the MOFA stamps, and any apostille seals visible. A translation of the clean diploma without attestation stamps will need to be redone after attestation. This doubles the cost and adds a week.

Assuming the Typing Centre Can Handle It

Typing centres in business centres, Tasheel offices, and shopping mall translation counters handle Arabic-English pairs. Latin is outside their scope. An MOJ-licensed translator with language expertise handles the Latin pair directly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our translation services.

Why is my university degree written in Latin?

Many European universities issue diplomas in Latin as a formal academic tradition. This is common in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, and some Italian and Finnish universities. The degree text — your name, the qualification, the date, the institution — is entirely in Latin. The transcripts and supplements are usually in the local language or English, but the diploma itself may be Latin only.

Does MOHRE accept a Latin diploma directly?

No. MOHRE requires documents in Arabic or English. A Latin diploma must be translated into Arabic by an MOJ-licensed translator before it can be submitted for work permit processing. Submitting it in Latin results in a rejection at the upload stage or during document review.

Is Latin-to-Arabic translation a two-step process?

It depends on the translator's capabilities. An MOJ-licensed translator who reads Latin can translate directly from Latin to Arabic. If the translator does not read Latin, a two-step process is used: a certified Latin-to-English translation by a sworn translator in the issuing country, followed by an MOJ-certified English-to-Arabic translation in the UAE. The two-step approach adds cost and time but produces the same legally valid result.

Do I need to translate the transcripts separately?

Yes. The diploma and the transcripts are separate documents. The diploma is in Latin, but the transcripts are usually in German, Polish, Hungarian, or English. Each needs its own MOJ-certified Arabic translation. MOHRE and Golden Visa applications require both the diploma and the transcripts.

Does the Latin diploma need attestation before translation?

Yes. The attestation chain is the same as any foreign degree: home-country authority, home MOFA, UAE embassy in the home country, then MOFA UAE after arrival. The translation must be done after the attestation stamps are applied — translating before attestation means the translation does not reflect the final attested document.

How much does Latin diploma translation cost?

Latin diploma translation is priced as a specialist language pair. The diploma itself is typically one to two pages. We provide a fixed quote after reviewing the document via WhatsApp. The cost is higher than a standard English-to-Arabic translation because Latin requires specific expertise, but lower than most applicants expect.

Can I use a university-issued English translation instead of a Latin-to-Arabic translation?

If the university issues an official English version of the diploma with the university seal and registrar signature, MOHRE may accept an MOJ-certified Arabic translation of that English version. The English version must be a formal university document, not a convenience translation. Check with your university registrar whether they issue official English diplomas.
