Japan records births, marriages, divorces, adoptions and deaths in a household register kept by the city, ward, town or village office of the registered domicile. A tohon is the full certified copy of every entry in that register, as opposed to a shohon, which shows selected members only.

Couples moving to the UAE usually present the tohon as proof of marriage when one spouse sponsors the other. By the time it reaches us, the register has normally been translated into English in Japan and attested, so our job is to carry that English text into Arabic for the residence file.

Japanese dates often appear by imperial era, such as Showa, Heisei or Reiwa. We keep the dates exactly as the English translation gives them, including any Gregorian equivalent, and we never recalculate or add information that is not on the attested document.

How to recognise a koseki tohon

  • A heading such as "Certificate of All Matters in the Family Register" or "Koseki Tohon" on the English version.
  • A registered domicile address and the name of the head of the register at the top.
  • One block per family member, listing parents, relationship and dated events.
  • A certification line and seal from the municipal mayor, followed by the attestation pages.

What to send

  • The attested tohon and its English translation, every page, with the MOFA page or QR code visible.
  • Passport copies of each person named, and the visa or entry permit if already issued.
  • The authority that will receive the Arabic version, for example the immigration office handling the spouse visa.
  • Any extra pages, so we can tell you if the register needs a separate quote.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our translation services.

How much does it cost to translate a Japanese koseki into Arabic?

The standard price is AED 300 per document and express is AED 400, for one koseki tohon that already has an English translation, translated from English into Arabic by an MOJ-licensed translator. Urgent timing has no fixed price; ask on WhatsApp. Longer registers are quoted on WhatsApp before you pay.

Do you translate the Japanese original?

No. This price is for a family register that already carries an English translation, usually bound with it for attestation. We work from that English text into Arabic. If you only have the Japanese copy, send it on WhatsApp and we tell you what can be done.

How do you spell our names in Arabic?

We follow the passport, and the visa or entry permit if you have one, so the Arabic spelling of the husband, wife and children matches the residence file. Send a copy of each passport page with the names.

Does the koseki need MOFA attestation first?

For a UAE spouse or family residence visa, the register is normally attested in Japan, at the UAE embassy in Tokyo and then by MOFA in the UAE. This is general guidance only; attestation is a separate step that we do not arrange, and the receiving authority sets its own requirements.

Will the immigration office accept the translation?

The receiving authority makes the final acceptance decision. Send its instruction with the register so we can check the format before we start.
