Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil Personal Status, in force since 1 February 2023, gives non-Muslim residents of the UAE a civil route to marriage and divorce. Either spouse can ask the court for a divorce without proving harm or fault, and the other spouse is notified before the court rules. Its executive regulations were issued by Cabinet Resolution No. 122 of 2023.

In Dubai these cases are heard by the Personal Status Court of Dubai Courts. Once the divorce is final, the court can issue a divorce certificate: a short Arabic record that names both spouses and confirms the marriage has ended.

Expatriates usually need it in English to update their civil status at their own embassy, to register the divorce in their home country or to marry again. Our translation follows the Arabic line by line, so an official abroad can match each field to the original.

How to recognise the certificate

  • The Government of Dubai and Dubai Courts emblems usually at the top, with a heading that names it as a divorce certificate.
  • A short block with each spouse's name, nationality and identity or passport number.
  • A case or application number from the Personal Status Court and the date the divorce took effect.
  • A verification code, usually a barcode or QR code, and the issuing officer's electronic signature.

A longer document with numbered paragraphs on custody, maintenance or property is the judgment, not the certificate. It can be translated too, but it is priced as its own file.

What to send

  • The certificate as issued: the PDF you received, or a clear scan of the printed copy.
  • Passport copies for both spouses, so the English names match.
  • The judgment as well, if the embassy or court abroad asks for the divorce terms.
  • The country and office that will receive the English copy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our translation services.

How much does it cost to translate a Dubai Courts divorce certificate into English?

The standard price is AED 150 for one Dubai Courts divorce certificate of one page, translated from Arabic into English by an MOJ-licensed legal translator. This price covers the translation only. Express and urgent timing are not priced here: a real person on our team replies on WhatsApp within 1 to 3 minutes and then confirms the exact price before you pay. The receiving authority makes the final acceptance decision.

Is the divorce certificate the same as the divorce judgment?

No. The certificate is a short court record that the marriage between the two named spouses has ended and from what date. The final judgment is usually longer and sets out custody, maintenance, housing and any division of property. Many embassies and foreign registries want the certificate; family courts and schools abroad often ask for the judgment as well. Send both if you are unsure and we will tell you what each one covers before you pay.

I am not Muslim. Is my divorce handled under a different law?

Since 1 February 2023, divorces between non-Muslim spouses in the UAE can be decided under Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil Personal Status, which allows either spouse to ask for a divorce without proving fault. In Dubai the case goes to the Personal Status Court of Dubai Courts. The translation follows the wording of your document, whichever law it cites.

How do you write our names in English?

We copy each name exactly as it appears in that person's passport, so the English certificate matches the documents your embassy or registry already holds. Send passport copies for both spouses if you have them.

Where can I use the English translation?

The English translation can be used for submissions to an embassy, a civil registry in your home country or another authority that asks for an English version. Our service is the translation only. Each receiving authority sets its own requirements and makes the final acceptance decision, so check what it needs before you submit.
